Mathematics Minor

Students interested in pursuing a minor in Mathematics should contact their adviser, and the OSU Math Department as early in their program as possible. With appropriate elective choices, Students pursuing a BSAE are typically able to complete a math minor with relatively few courses. Present requirements are as follows (see the Math Majors Handbook for updates):

Undergraduates may earn a minor in Mathematics and have this entered on their transcript along with their major field. Mathematics is a logical supporting subject for majors in a wide variety of fields. The minor in Math is very flexible, and allows you to take courses in a broad range of mathematical subjects. When it comes to searching for jobs or graduate schools, we have found that developing an ``official'' secondary field of competence may well be more useful than a random selection of elective courses.

Here are the requirements for a minor in Mathematics (see Chapter 4 for the major's requirements):

  • (a) Ten (10) hours consisting of MATH 2145 and 2155 (Formerly 2265 and 2365), Calculus I and Calculus II.

  • (b) Twelve (12) additional hours of Math courses requiring Calculus I, Calculus II, or Discrete Math I as a prerequisite. (Note: MATH 2653 (formerly 2203), Discrete Math I, does not count towards the minor, but Math 3653 (formerly 3203), Discrete Math II, does count.)

  • The lowest acceptable grade in each course is a C.

Talk to some Math professors, and find out who the undergraduate advisers are--they can help you find the courses best suited to your needs. If you do elect Math for a minor, bring a grade report to the Mathematics Department Office during your last semester at OSU, so they can complete the necessary paperwork.

The courses available for the Math minor include extensive offerings in every major area of pure and applied mathematics. Some courses emphasize both theory and applications.
