March 23-27 - CEAT Week is a week in the spring dedicated to students of CEAT that include fun activities and free food, look at the schedule here. This year CEAT Student Council will be showcasing a different country each day, and its uses of engineering, architecture, and technology. During CEAT Week, CEAT Student Council will be holding several charity functions in which all proceeds will be benefiting their philanthropy, Coaches Vs. Cancer.

Aerospace Students Present Aircraft Designs to Air Force

As part of the US Air Force's US Air, Trade and Technology Expo, OSU Aerospace Engineering students Eric Johnson and Alan Larson are presenting their winning aircraft designs to the Air Force and public this week in Dayton, OH. For the first time, the Air Force has invited winning aircraft designs to be part of the exposition, highlighting efforts of undergraduate students across the nation. Since winning both 1st and 2nd place this year at the AIAA Design/Build/Fly competition in April, OSU secured the top spot at the event that highlights activities of the Air Force and other aviation sectors in the nation. Over a thousand visitors to the expo have seen the OSU aircraft designs.

FAI world record broken by the Pterosoar
September 14, 2007

Dr. Andy Arena and his aerospace engineering student team, lead by OSU aerospace engineering students Dustin Gamble, Valentin Sanchez and Ryan Paul set another FAI world record in point and return range mission using a new plane called the “Pterosoar” designed and constructed at OSU. This was a joint project with Cal State LA, who was responsible for the fuel cell and hydrogen tank system.

MAE Student to present paper on Mars Aircraft at international Congress

The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics has selected OSU student Johnny Chandler to present a paper on a design for a Mars aircraft at the 58th International Astronautical Congress in September. Chandler, an undergraduate from Chowchilla, Calif., will travel all expenses paid to Hyderabad, India, to present the paper, “Design and Flight Testing of a Mars Aircraft Prototype Using Inflatable Wings.” For more about the aircraft project, visit click here.

Discovery Channel Films Mars Airplane

The Discovery Channel filmed the MAE Mars Airplane team on June 5, for an upcoming show. The filming included students working on the inflatable wings and wind tunnel tests and included two maiden flights of never before flown configurations.

Dr Arena presented with State of Oklahoma Citation of Congratulations

State Senator Dr. Jim Halligan presented Dr. Andy Arena with a "State of Oklahoma Citation of Congratulations", recognizing his receiving the 2009 Medal of Excellence in Teaching at a Research University, his profound impact on the success of the aerospace engineering program, his successful program of students who design, build, and fly in international competitions, and his internationally recognized world records, including one of the most memorable aeronautic records of 2006 along with Steve Fossett's flight around the world.

Dr Lilley to receive ASME Worcester Reed Warner Medal

Dr. David Lilley has been selected to receive the prestigious ASME Worcester Reed Warner Medal, awarded to an individual for outstanding contribution to the permanent literature of engineering. Dr. Lilley's citation reads, "for innovative mathematical tools development, through the fundamental understanding of complex swirl flows, and their use to examine combustion performance, efficiency improvements, fire onset and fire growth in industrial applications." Formal presentation of the award will be at the President's Luncheon, Nov 16, 2009, during the ASME International M. E. Congress in Orlando, FL.

Dr. Ghajar named Honorary Professor of Xi'an Jiaotong University
May 2009

Dr. Afshin Ghajar will be presented with this award in a special ceremony during his visit there in July. Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) is one of the top ten universities in China and is ranked number 1 in the field of Energy and Power Engineering. The Honorary Professorship at Xi'an Jiaotong University is one of the highest positions offered by the university to foreign scholars.

Dr. Komanduri selected as Phoenix Award Recipient

Dr. Ranga Komanduri has been selected by the OSU Graduate Student Association to receive the Phoenix Award, recognizing him for his outstanding service as advisor to graduate students.

Dr. Arena selected for Oklahoma Medal of Excellence
February 2009

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering would like to congratulate Dr. Andy Arena for being selected to receive the 2009 Medal of Excellence in Research University Teaching, given by the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence. This is the most prestigious teaching award for higher education in Oklahoma and will be presented May 16 at the annual Academic Awards Banquet in Norman. Dr. Arena and Dr. Lu selected as AIAA Associate Fellows
Fall 2008

The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) has selected Dr. Andy Arena and Dr. Hongbing Lu as AIAA Associate Fellows. Other AIAA Associate Fellows within the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering are: Dr. Jamey Jacob, Dr. Afshin Ghajar, and Dr. Frank Chambers. There is also an AIAA Fellow in the Department, Dr. David Lilley.

Dr. Spitler named OSU Regents Professor
August 12, 2008

Dr. Jeff Spitler has been elevated to the rank of OSU Regents Professor, which is the highest professorial rank at OSU. He joins Drs. Ranga Komanduri, Don Lucca, and Afshin Ghajar as the other MAE faculty members in this elite group of highly accomplished and internationally recognized faculty members.

MAE Department Welcomes New Faculty

The Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Department is happy to welcome two new professors starting this fall. Dr. David Rubenstein and Dr. Wei Yin, from Stony Brook University, are joining the faculty in August. Rubenstein is teaching MAE 3013, Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Analysis; Yin is teaching MAE 5010.378, Physiology and Physiological System Analysis, this fall.

OSU projects attract state funding for commercialization
July 12, 2007

MAE instructor, Lorenzo Cremachi, is one of two OSU instructors who will benefit from state funding of research projects due to the commercial viability of their studies. Cremaschi won $299,830 to improve compact heat pumps by using michchannel technology. This project was one of nine that was selected from 43 submitted statewide to the Oklahoma Center for the Advancement of Science and Technology. Albert Rosenberger, physics, also received funding.

OCAST to help fund five OSU research projects, including MAE's Dr. Hanan

The Oklahoma Center for Science and Technology has chosen research projects of five OSU instructors who will benefit from $4 million in funding over the next three years. Dr. Hanan's project will conduct research a new generation of durable dental crowns. Click here for more information regarding Hanan's research project.

Sarah Cary, MAE Student Honored for Philanthropy
…at the Women for OSU Leadership and Philanthropy Council’s inaugural symposium on April 23 at the Wes Watkins Center on the OSU Stillwater campus.

Women for OSU will recognize Sarah Cary, civil and mechanical engineering junior, as the Student Philanthropist of the Year. The Tulsa native has demonstrated leadership in philanthropy as Project Manager for Engineers without Borders, which supports community-driven development projects worldwide through the design and implementation of sustainable engineering projects. She has examined projects in Bolivia and South Africa and is developing a project in Honduras to build dorms for doctors, dentists and instructors. In addition to this honor, Cary will receive a $2,000 OSU scholarship.

2009 Goldwater Scholars Announced:

The MAE Department congratulates Ryan Paul, a senior in aerospace engineering, for being named a 2009 Goldwater Scholar. The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship awards highly-qualified students in the fields of Mathematics, Science and Engineering.1 Ryan joins recent MAE Goldwater Scholars Paul Egan and Melinda Hale.

The Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Department would like to congratulate MAE graduate student Dhivakar Jeeven Kumar and MAE sophomore Ellen Jarrett; both were recently named winners for the 20th Annual OSU Research Symposium presentations! Dhivakar Jeeven Kumar, working with Dr. Raman Singh, was selected as the 2nd place winner in the Graduate Posters for Physical Science and Technology. Ellen Jarrett, working with Dr. David Rubenstein, won the second place Undergraduate Poster for the Biomedical Sciences Category.

Michael Bolitho and Johnny Chandler competed at the AIAA Region IV Student Competition May 3 and 4. Bolitho received first place in the Masters Division and will travel to Reno in January for the National Competition. Chandler received second place in the undergraduate division.

As part of CEAT Week Celebrations, students were invited to lunch, which included barbeque goodies, cotton candy and a chance to dunk their favorite professor. Delahoussaye attracted a large crowd. Dr. Hoberock, Dr. Areana and his graduate class were in attendance.
