Admission Requirements

  • Degree from accredited college or university
  • Rank in upper 10 percentile of class or have "B" average in studies
  • Master's applicants must have Bachelor's degree
  • Doctoral applicants must have Master's degree
    • Doctoral applicants must have an adviser before being fully admitted-Applications will be distributed among MAE Faculty in specified area(s) of interest, and if appropriate Faculty member needs a Ph.D. student, s/he might choose to be the advisor

      OSU Graduates

  • Official academic transcript
  • Application fee
  • Any additional relevant information about yourself, such as projects and area(s) of research area(s) of interest
  • Any pre-arranged adviser selections with the MAE Graduate Director

      American Students

  • Official academic transcripts
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores
  • Application fee
  • Three letters of recommendation
    (typed on official institution or corporation letterhead)
  • Any additional relevant information about yourself, such as projects and area(s) of research area(s) of interest

      International Students

*In order to receive your I-20 in a timely manner, we suggest an application be submitted at least 6 months prior to the date on which you intend to begin classes.  The School of MAE strictly follows the deadlines set forth by the Graduate College. 

  • Official transcripts (in English)
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores
  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) scores
  • Application fee
  • Three letters of recommendation
    (typed on official institution or corporation letterhead)
  • Any other relevent information about yourself, such as projects and area(s) of research area(s) of interest


* The fastest and easiest way to complete the application process is through the online application at the Graduate College homepage All correspondence for admission into a graduate program is done through the Graduate College.

Admission Process

  • Materials collected and processed at the Graduate College

  • Graduate College notification if more information needed

  • Materials sent to the MAE department
    Students cannot apply directly to the mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Deptartment 

  • Graduate College notification of admission

Note:  Please do not correspond with the School of MAE regarding admission status. Unofficial results cannot be provided. 

Teaching Assistantships

  • Upon acceptance, applicants will automatically be considered for a teaching assistantship.  Please do not correspond with MAE about possible financial aid.  An official letter will be mailed immediately to applicant if an assistantship has been awarded.
